Founded in 1984, the Charlotte Shag Club is one
of the oldest shag clubs in existence. Membership recently has exceeded
300 and is open to anyone 21 or older. Dues are $25 per year.
The club's President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Sergeant at Arms, are elected annually by the membership. The new president then appoints the various committee heads -- membership, social, communications, etc. The elected officers and the committee heads, along with the prior year's president, make up the Board of Directors which meets monthly to discuss new applications for membership, financial matters, and upcoming events. All meetings are governed by a set of internally-written bylaws.
We dance on Thursday nights at Lynn's starting at 8:30pm to a variety of well-known DJ's. We also periodically host dances on Saturday night at Lynn's.
On any given night, there is a balance between singles and couples.
The club also holds shag lessons, special parties, bus trips, and fund-raisers
throughout the year. When possible, monies are donated to various charities
as approved by the Board of Directors.
Many cities in the Carolina’s and surrounding states have
a shag club. There are approximately 100 shag clubs and, on most
weekends, there is a shag event in your area sponsored by one of
the clubs. All clubs belong to the Association of Carolina Shag
Clubs (ACSC), which holds semi-annual meetings hosted by one of
the clubs in conjunction with a weekend party.
Twice a year (usually in April and September), literally thousands
of shaggers congregate at North Myrtle Beach for a 10-day event
officially titled the “Society Of Stranders”, or more
commonly referred to as “SOS”. SOS can be likened to
an adult Spring Break. Within two square blocks there are no less
than 7 dance clubs available to those that have purchased an SOS
membership card, which is good for the entire year. In each dance
club, DJ’s will play great shag music from noon until the
wee hours of the morning.
Other shag events are held during the year at North Myrtle Beach,
the most widely attended being a 3-day event in late January called ‘Mid-Winter’ which
is similar to SOS.
